Kat Graham, widely recognized for her role in The Vampire Diaries, shared her excitement about playing the legendary Diana Ross in the upcoming Michael biopic. The film, set to hit theaters on April 18, 2025, tells the story of Michael Jackson's life, with Jaafar Jackson playing the King of Pop.
In an interview at the 2024 TIME100 Next event, Graham, 35, described the experience of stepping into Ross's iconic shoes as "surreal." She humorously noted, “The hair’s a little bigger,” before switching tones to express the depth of the moment. "Finding out I was cast was very, very surreal," Graham shared with PEOPLE.
This role holds personal significance for Graham, who has known legendary music producer Quincy Jones for nearly 20 years. In the biopic, Kendrick Sampson plays Jones, adding to the full-circle experience for Graham. “It was surreal to see my good friend Kendrick portraying someone who’s like a father figure to me,” she said, reflecting on her long-time connection to Jones.
Despite her excitement, Graham admitted she never imagined herself playing Diana Ross. “Who imagines themselves as Diana Ross?” she mused. “Maybe in the shower or in your car. I didn’t think I would get it. I just try to come from a good place and have fun.”
Graham also emphasized the importance of honoring Ross and other Black women through her portrayal. “Diana was part of a revolutionary time in music that impacted the Civil Rights movement, and it's an honor to play her,” she said.
In addition to Graham’s role, Michael will feature Colman Domingo as Joe Jackson and Nia Long as Katherine Jackson, with fans eagerly awaiting the film’s release. Despite the magnitude of the project, Graham confessed to battling "imposter syndrome," but remains excited for audiences to see the film, which she promises will feature "a lot of good music."
The Michael biopic is shaping up to be one of the most anticipated films of 2025, celebrating the legacy of Michael Jackson and the icons who shaped his life.
