Glenn Close, known for her role as the strong-willed grandmother in the film adaptation of JD Vance’s memoir "Hillbilly Elegy," took to Instagram on Sunday to mock the Ohio senator’s past comments about “childless cat ladies.” Close shared a photo with her cat, Eve, and captioned it with a playful jab at Vance, saying, “Eve would have left a bleeding mouse head in the bed of anyone who criticized any kind of lady with a CAT!”
Close’s post follows her earlier criticism of Vance’s stance on states' rights to enact restrictive abortion laws. Last week, she shared a meme referencing Texas's abortion ban, which lacks exceptions for rape or incest, and sarcastically commented, “We sure wouldn’t want you to end up childless with cats!” The meme depicted a health care provider telling a young girl, “Sorry Sally, This is Texas, you’ll have to keep your daddy’s baby.”
Vance has been under scrutiny recently after a 2021 clip resurfaced in which he questioned Vice President Kamala Harris’s leadership abilities, citing her lack of biological children. In a Fox News interview, Vance remarked, “We are effectively run in this country via the Democrats, a bunch of childless cat ladies who are miserable at their own lives and the choices that they’ve made and so they want to make the rest of the country miserable, too.” He clarified that his comments were directed at Harris, Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.
In response to the backlash, Vance claimed his remarks were taken out of context, accusing Democrats of being “explicitly antichild and antifamily” and promoting an “increasingly antiparent and antichild attitude.”
