Dengue outbreak: Hospitals told to get ‘more doctors’ for special units’

Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif on Wednesday issued instructions to all public hospitals to set up separate units for dengue patients. He also directed the Health Department to assign more doctors and paramedical staff in these units.


The number of dengue patients in Punjab on Health Department’s records reached 1,958 after 142 new cases were reported on Wednesday, 132 of them in Lahore. Eight cases were reported in Faisalabad and one each in Multan and Bahawalpur. Among those affected, 76 are Rescue 1122 officials. Hundreds of patients suspecting a dengue infection are visiting the hospitals everyday.

The chief minister also directed that a hotline be set up for dengue patients besides a dengue control room where the citizens could register their complaints and seek information. He said that the situation created by dengue virus will have to be dealt with on an emergency basis.

The chief minister was presiding over a meeting of an emergency committee set up to control dengue virus. Senator Pervaiz Rashid, MNA Hamza Shahbaz Sharif, the health secretary, the Lahore commissioner, the district coordination officer and several senior doctors attended the meeting. The chief minister said that 90 per cent of the city had been sprayed with insecticides. He expressed his concern over some complaints received during open kutcheries about the quality of the spray. He directed the health secretary to consult the experts on how to ascertain the quality of the spray.

He also directed the hospitals to maintain complete record of all dengue patients. The chief minister sought a report on special dengue units in these hospitals for Thursday (today). He also issued instructions to the additional inspector general of police (Special Branch) to present a comprehensive report on updates in every special emergency committee meeting.
