Ariana Grande's music video for ‘The Boy Is Mine’ includes special appearances by Brandy and Monica.
Brandy and Monica portray news anchors in the video, released on Friday, June 7. Their roles are fitting considering they collaborated on the original hit ‘The Boy Is Mine’ in 1998, which topped the Billboard Hot 100 for 13 weeks.
Although Grande's ‘The Boy Is Mine’ is a different song, its title clearly pays homage to Brandy and Monica's iconic single. The release of the music video coincides with the anniversary of the original track reaching No. 1 on the charts.
“This week, 26 years ago on June 5, 1998 THE BOY IS MINE reached number 1 Billboard Hot 100 … History … Legacy @brandy,” Monica wrote via her Instagram Story on Friday alongside a photo of her and Brandy dressed all in black for Grande’s video.
In the beginning of the video, Monica and Brandy talk about Mayor Max Starling, portrayed by Penn Badgley, and the upcoming press conference he's scheduled to deliver. Badgley then presents a televised address addressing the city's rat issue, while Grande watches and prepares a love potion for the unsuspecting mayor.
Grande hinted at Badgley's appearance at 'The Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon,' Thursday, June 6.
