Health expert urges public to stay hydrated in intense heat

Says high temps lead to dehydration, formation of kidney stones

Renowned Cardiologist Maj-Gen (retd) Dr Azhar Mahmood Kayani Sunday urged the public to drink adequate water to stay hydrated in the intense heat of the summer season.

He said that high temperatures cause dehydration and can form kidney stones in the body.

While talking to the media, he said “Elderly patients with diabetes and hypertension are at risk of affecting their kidney function if they fail to take adequate water.” He explained that blood thickens due to insufficient intake of water and can directly affect the functioning of the human brain.

Moreover, it can increase the risk of blockage of blood vessels and heart stroke.

He further said that people need to drink more water in hot and humid weather to lower their body temperature. “During summer days, heat is intolerable and people should avoid going out in the sun, however, if necessary, always apply sunblock before stepping out in the sun.

It is better to drink more than eat in summer. Moreover, people with heart disease should take a light and nutritious diet.

Avoid foods that contain a high amount of sugar and carbohydrates as this puts more pressure on the heart and is not good for health," he suggested.

He further said that it was vital to keep the body cool at a maintained temperature.

He urged people to track calories and stick to healthier food options. The public should consume lots of fresh fruits and vegetables to gain the nutrients that they lose when they sweat, he added.

He further said, “People who have had a kidney stone are at high risk of having another one.

They need to be vigilant about consuming enough water this summer, take their prescribed medications and avoid unhealthy foods and beverages.”
