Orders issued for cleaning drains

WASA offical says alll arrangements finalised to cope with emergencies, possible flooding during monsoon

Commissioner Rawalpindi Division Noor-ul Amin Mengal has directed the authorities concerned to clean 11 small drains of Rawalpindi city ahead of the monsoon.

He also directed the authorities concerned to shift the machinery of Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA) to low-lying areas as part of a quick response to save the citizens from expected flooding.

The Rawalpindi Municipal Corporation and WASA officials told the commissioner that 11 small nullahs of Rawalpindi city had been cleaned and the cleanliness work of small drains would also be started soon.

Meanwhile, WASA Managing Director Muhammad Tanveer said that the agency had finalised all arrangements to cope with emergencies and possible flooding during monsoon rains. He said that five flood response units had been set up at Liaquat Bagh, Moti Mahal, Commercial Market, Bagh Sardaran and Khayaban-e-Sir Syed. A flood control room had also been activated at the WASA headquarters for monitoring the water level in Nullah Leh.

He said that the cleanliness work of Nullah Leh was in full swing and the project would be completed before the start of the monsoon. WASA Rawalpindi has 28 dewatering sets, 5 jetting and six sucker machines to cope with flooding. WASA Rawalpindi would make all-out efforts to provide round-the-clock water supply through 22 water bowsers particularly to the residents of affected areas during rains, he added.

Meanwhile, Rawalpindi Deputy Commissioner Tahir Farooq on Monday visited different areas of the city to monitor the situation after the rains.
