Federal Minister for Industries and Production Makhdoom Khusro Bakhtiar on Wednesday told officials of the Petroleum Division to ensure supply of re-gasified liquefied natural gas (RLNG)/ locally produced gas to fertiliser plants to enable them to meet the urea production target.
“This will ensure timely availability of fertilisers to farmers and enhance the agricultural output to meet the requirement of food crops in the country,” the minister said while chairing a meeting to discuss the demand for urea during the upcoming Rabi sowing season.
Representatives of the fertiliser industry and senior officials of the Petroleum Division, Finance Division and Ministry of National Food Security and Research attended the meeting.
Bakhtiar was informed that the requirement of urea was estimated at around 3.2 million tonnes during the upcoming Rabi sowing season, which would be met through domestic production.
During the meeting, the minister noted that the domestic production of fertiliser would slash urea imports and would be a huge relief for the balance of payments.
“Moreover, it will ensure availability of fertiliser at affordable prices to the farmers,” the minister said.
