KARACHI:

The Sindh High Court (SHC) sought on Thursday a clarification from the University of Karachi (KU) regarding the lack of teachers having PhD degrees in the law department

A two-member bench heard a petition regarding the non-availability of teachers having PhD in the department.

The Higher Education Commission submitted in its reply that a department must have at least two PhD faculty members. A university degree that does not meet this requirement is not recognised.

The bench asked how students at KU were doing PhD in the law department when this condition had not been met.

The court sought a clarification from the KU on April 8.

Separately, the court, while hearing a petition regarding state of safety arrangements for visitors at Keenjhar Lake, was presented a report by Assistant Advocate General (AAG) Shahryar Mahar.

The court directed that it be made mandatory for boat owners to provide life jackets for all occupants in a vessel. Boat owners should give an undertaking that they will be held responsible for any mishap.

AAG Mahar informed the court that the provincial government had completed the process of allowing 60 boats to ply on the lake.

The bench ordered the relevant deputy commissioner and police to enforce safety measures and a progress report be submitted at the next hearing.
