If pandemic hadn't hit, Alia and I would’ve been married: Ranbir Kapoor

The 'Rockstar' actor recently talked about inspirations, late father Rishi Kapoor, nepotism and his marriage plans

It has been over two years since we saw Ranbir Kapoor gracing the big screen with his acting prowess. The actor was last seen in Sanjay Dutt's biopic, Sanju, in which he essayed the titular role. Ranbir managed to wow his fans and critics alike with his portrayal of the famous Bollywood star.

While the actor isn't really known for having a tete-a-tete, Ranbir recently sat down with popular Indian journalist Rajeev Masand and talked about his inspirations, late father Rishi Kapoor, upcoming projects, nepotism and his marriage plans with girlfriend Alia Bhatt.

The pandemic hasn't been easy for anyone. Plans went astray, vacations postponed as many tried adjusting to the 'new normal'. One of the plans that were delayed was Ranbir's wedding to long-time girlfriend Alia Bhatt.

When the renowned journalist asked the star if he is planning to get married anytime soon, Ranbir said that the deal would’ve been ‘sealed’ had the ‘pandemic not hit our lives’. “I don’t want to jinx it by saying anything. I want to tick mark that goal very soon in my life,” he revealed.

The couple had been quarantining together as well. Ranbir shared it was while living together that he realised how impressive Alia really is. While talking about taking up any online classes during the lockdown, the Rockstar actor quipped, "My girlfriend Alia is a bit of an overachiever, and she probably took every class there is - from guitar to screenwriting. I always feel like an underachiever next to her. But no, I didn’t take any classes. Initially, we were dealing with the family crisis, and then I got into reading, spent time with my family, and I watch two-three films every day.”

The legacy his father left behind:

Ranbir also talked about his late father, Bollywood veteran Rishi Kapoor, who passed away this year. The star divulged on how he had always looked up to his father for inspiration, adding he always knew he had pretty big shoes to fill.

"I don’t know if I am as good as him," he said, "I also don’t know if I can live up to those expectations and can even be compared to him. Maybe I have a style of my own. I don’t think he had a style of acting, which could be copied. A lot of people say I sound like him and smile like him."

Sharing his account on whether he had taken up any acting tips from Rishi, Ranbir responded, "I think I have learned more from him off-screen. Just his passion for cinema and acting like he listens to the radio all the time and it’s uncanny that he can always drum the song on the desk with his fingers and he will be completely in tune with the song. He will catch the off beats and he also sings really well. So, he is passionate about the entire field of cinema be it songs, acting, drama or dancing. Also, I admire his love for the family including his brothers, sisters and parents. So, I have learned more from him off-screen."

His take on nepotism:

The Bombay Velvet star has always been asked about his take on the much-heated debate revolving around nepotism in Bollywood. Being a star kid, Ranbir shared it was a two-edged sword.

"There is an upside because you can get a big break and people look forward to your films but the flipside is that expectations are very high," the actor commented. "People are critical right from your strand of hair to your nail. So, there are ups and downs to everything. I am not saying that somebody else’s struggle is more than mine or mine is more than his. But everyone has his own struggles and I had mine too."

Ranbir will next be seen in Ayan Mukerji's star-studded directorial Brahmastra. The film stars Ranbir with Alia and megastar Amitabh Bachchan.
