ISLAMABAD:

The Japanese government and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) on Wednesday handed over equipment for a Precursor Information Management System (PIMS) and other networking equipment to the Anti-Narcotics Force.

A handing over ceremony in this regard was held at the ANF headquarters in Rawalpindi on Wednesday with Japanese Ambassador Kuninori Matsuda, UNODC Pakistan Country Office Representative Jeremy Milsom along with Federal Narcotics Control Minister Azam Swati and ANF Director-General Maj-Gen Arif Malik.

The Japanese envoy said that the equipment was one of the deliverables under a Japanese-funded UNODC project worth $6.5 million aimed at strengthening Pakistani border security against illicit drug trafficking and related transnational organized crime.

The equipment, he said, will be utilized to improve coordination between the ANF and other members of the Inter-Agency Task Force (IATF) on Narcotics Control to help stop the proliferation of drugs.

Matsuda commended the efforts by UNODC and ANF in fighting the illicit drug trade.
