Capital police round up 4,000 ‘criminals’ in four months

Most arrests pertained to proclaimed offenders, drug and unlicenced gun carriers

ISLAMABAD: The Islamabad Police claim to have arrested as many as 4,293 suspects in the first four months of the year, recovering stolen goods worth more than Rs281.4 million from them, a police spokesperson stated.

The official said that some 158 dacoity and robbery cases were solved from January to May and 310 suspected robbers were arrested. The official added that they had recovered looted items worth Rs26.9 million from them, including jewellery and other valuables.

Police also nabbed 276 suspects involved in 182 cases of street crime and theft while looted items worth Rs87 million were also recovered from them.

As many as 94 suspects were held for their alleged involvement in 117 cases of car tampering and theft while 124 vehicles worth Rs110 million were also recovered from them.

Likewise, 77 suspected bike thieves were held and 78 motorbikes were recovered from them. Police also arrested 631 absconders during this period, including 301 proclaimed offenders and 330 court absconders wanted by police in cases of murder, attempt to murder, dacoity and other crimes.

Moreover, police claimed to have nabbed some 614 suspects for their alleged involvement in bootlegging and drug peddling. As much as 220.8 kilogrammes of hashish was recovered from them along with 20.644kgs of heroin, 6.41kgs of opium, 1.362gms of crystal methamphetamine (ice), 11 grammes of cocaine and 6,616 bottles of liquor.

The Islamabad Police said that they had launched a focused crackdown against those involved in supplying drugs at educational institutions, arresting seven people and registering seven cases against them. A total of 5.46kgs of hashish and 325gms of heroin were recovered from them.

Police also arrested 309 suspects for the possession of illegal weapons and recovered 19 Kalashnikovs, six carbines, 22 daggers, 275 pistols and 6,167 bullets from them.

Further, eight blind murder cases were also traced and 16 suspects involved in these case were nabbed during the reporting period.

During a special campaign against professional alms seekers, 3,243 beggars were arrested while 424 habitual culprits were also held during the same period.

Police also caught 49 suspects red-handed who were allegedly planning to commit robberies.

As many as 14 foreigners were also arrested under the Foreigners Act after they were found residing in the country illegally.

The police also held 105 suspects for their alleged involvement in aerial firing. They were booked in 44 cases.

As many as 93 gamblers and 17 cases were registered against them while 42 suspects were arrested for their involvement in sheesha smoking and 13 cases were registered against them.

Police also arrested 895 suspects during various search operations conducted by Islamabad police along with personnel of law enforcement agencies.

As many as 415 suspects were arrested under section 188 PPC — for violating Section 144 — while two more were arrested for carrying fake currency and 78 suspects were arrested for their alleged involvement in immoral activities.

A further 19 people were arrested for selling unhygienic food while another 55 were arrested for illegally selling petroleum products in various areas of the federal capital.

Police also held one person for the violation of the Amplifier Act.

While reviewing this performance, Operations- DIG Syed said that criminal elements will not be spared and those involved in such acts will have to face action as per law.

He has also appealed to citizens to cooperate with Islamabad police in curbing activities of such elements.
