KARACHI: Sindh High Court Chief Justice Ahmed Ali Shaikh said on Sunday that the establishment of the Shaheed Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto University of Law (SZABUL) reflected the enlightenment of a proud nation and the commitment of the government to promote higher education in the province.
He expressed these views while delivering a presidential address at a seminar on the collaborative programme of SZABUL with the University of Northampton (UoN) on Sunday.
Justice Shaikh said that SZABUL, the first law university of the country, was the need of the hour and that it was a matter of great satisfaction that it had been imparting quality legal education to the students of Sindh for the last five years.
"Today, I am happy to see that in a very short time, SZABUL has achieved beyond its defined goals," he said, adding that it providing legal education at par with international standards would not have been possible without the continuous efforts of its founding Vice-Chancellor (VC) Justice (retd) Qazi Khalid Ali, he added.

UoN VC Prof Nick Petford, while elaborating the collaborative programme, said that while planning the collaboration both varsities were mindful of the needs of the 21st century. He said that Pakistan shares common law with the United Kingdom and added that the students would benefit greatly from the collaborative programme.
He said that UoN was one of the three oldest and most prestigious universities of the UK. "Our government ranks universities into three categories, gold, silver and bronze and UoN is ranked in the gold category", he added.
Justice (R) Ali said with a common vision, both UoN and the SZABUL had moved towards developing a unique blend of educational opportunities for Pakistani students in the discipline of law.
He added that with this strong foundation, students of the law university would achieve much success in their chosen profession. "We are committed to developing high-quality partnerships with like-minded universities and organisations," he added.
Justice (R) Ali said that the SZABUL and UoN's collaboration was the only foreign study programme wherein the curricula of both the universities were brought in consonance with each other through the process of articulation and mapping.
He said that Pakistani students studying in UoN and British students studying in SZABUL would study the same syllabus. He added that the research partnerships will enable us to bring researchers together to resolve some of the world's most challenging problems.
He said that he had high hopes that the programme would not only raise the standard of higher education in the country, but would also produce good lawyers, good constitutional experts, good judges, good bureaucrats and good law teachers. Press Release
