“I'm not that flawless person. I could never live up to that. My hair looks awful most of the time. It looks great when I'm on a carpet, sure, but that's not the only side I want people to see of myself," Riverdale star Lili Reinhart opened up about body image in an interview with Harper's Bazaar.

Bollywood starlet, Ileana D'Cruz somehow felt the same. But just a tad bit more. In a 2017 interview, the Rustom actor openly talked about a disorder she was suffering from.

“I was always a very self-conscious person and was picked on for my body type. I used to feel low and sad all the time but didn’t know I was suffering from depression and Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD) till I got help. All I wanted to do was to be accepted by everyone," she told Hindustan Times.

So what exactly is BDD? In a recent study, the disorder is a medical condition which requires “timely diagnosis and treatment”, Indian psychotherapist Dr Vihan Sanyal explaine.

“People with BDD become obsessed with their physical imperfections (often imaginary), to the point that their imperfections are the only thing they see when they look in the mirror.”

It might happen as a result of childhood bullying and teasing as well as sexual abuse and trauma. The ones suffering from BDD are preoccupied with a perceived flaw in their appearance which others may not even notice.

They are convinced that their appearance has defects that make them look ugly and unattractive. Furthermore, they strongly believe that people are likely to pay attention to the flaws in their appearance and they may get belittled or humiliated. That's why they reportedly try to conceal the perceived flaws with makeup and with clothes.

BDD can be curbed through therapies and sessions.
