L’atelier: Clothing extravaganza

A new summer collection is launched at L’atelier.

ISLAMABAD:

Hordes of women rummaged through the display of colourful lawn, chiffon, block prints and flowing gowns at the launch of Sadia Asad and Zarmina Khan’s summer collection at L’atelier on May 30.

Zarmina Khan, who has previously worked with chikkankari for seven years, talked about her latest collection ‘Beyond White’ displayed at the top storey. “I’ve used a lot of pure and Swiss lawn specifically designed for the summer. I’ve also made ethnic and modern cuts,” explained the designer, while standing near the racks of pure white clothing juxtaposed with multihued lawn prints.

“I’ve added enough buttons and embellishments that these can be worn both formally— like to weddings— and casually,” explained Khan.

“Very few people use chikkankari. It comes from India and I find the material perfect for the hot season. I’ve sold most of my collection as it is.”

Meanwhile, Lahore’s very own Sadia Asad, displayed her bold prints and gowns on the boutique’s ground floor.

“For my 2011 summer collection, I’ve done fusion work with lawn, chikkan and chiffon. I’ve made modern ball gowns and block prints too,” elucidated Asad.

Asad’s cuts are contemporary and sharp, adorned with bold colors and embellishments, catering to women between the ages of 15 and 35.

“I’ve been working on this collection for about a year now and never use only one fabric; the collection as a bit of everything: we’ve got chiffon, chikkan, branded lawns and even net.”

Both the designers were satisfied with hefty sales at the event. When asked about the potential demand of her displayed ball gowns, Asad revealed that she usually sends her pieces to the UAE, where they are more popular.

“I think her collection is doing very well,” commented Fatima Shahid, an intern at L’atelier. “People are buying. I love the lawn prints that Sadia’s done and would wear her clothes.”
