QUETTA: The technical fault in the grid system of Iran has suspended the supply of electricity to three districts of the Makran division, a Qesco official says.

“Due to the shortage of electricity, Panjgur, Turbat and Gwadar are witnessing load shedding of 12 to 14 hours,” said the Quetta Electric Supply Company official.

He said that the three districts of Makran division had plunged into darkness since two weeks.

However, keeping in view the difficulties of the people, Qesco officials held a meeting with the counsel general of Iran present in Quetta and discussed with him measures to fix the technical fault.

The Qesco official clarified that the fault was not from the Makran side, but from Iran.

On Friday, a complete shutter-down strike was observed in the Makran division, including the new port city of Gwadar, in protest against continuous suspension of power supply for the last two weeks.

The strike call was given by the National Party and in response bazaars, shopping centres, business establishments, private banks and shops remained closed in Turbat, Gwadar, Pasni, Panjgur, Jewani and Ormara.

Protestors blocked the coastal highway and staged a sit-in due to which all kinds of traffic remained suspended. They put up barricades and boulders on the highway linking Makran with Karachi and other areas of Balochistan.

Women also participated in the protest by blocking the Quetta-Karachi National Highway in the industrial town of Hub.
