Third LNG-based power plant completed

With 1,223MW capacity, it will start commercial operation by month end

ISLAMABAD: Work on Pakistan’s third liquefied natural gas (LNG)-based independent power project of 1,223 megawatts has been completed and it is expected to kick off commercial production in the last week of current month, which is another milestone achieved by the Private Power and Infrastructure Board (PPIB).

The project located at Balloki, Kasur district was initiated in 2015 and completed in a short time frame of less than three years, indicating close coordination and support among all stakeholders.



Project sponsors National Power Parks Management Company Limited, which works under the Ministry of Energy (Power Division), started construction activities on the state-of-the-art combined-cycle plant in November 2015 at a cost of $798.18 million.

The PPIB issued the Letter of Intent (LOI) and Letter of Support (LOS) for development of the project.

The power plant has been constructed with General Electric’s world-class multi-shaft H Frame combined-cycle gas turbines, which ensure highest efficiency of 61.63% and reduce fuel cost and carbon dioxide emissions over the lifecycle of the plant.



Harbin Electric International was its engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contractor with other Chinese and local contractors. It is the 38th independent power project processed and developed by the PPIB so far, with cumulative power generation capacity of 16,723 megawatts.

As far as re-gasified LNG-based power projects are concerned, the PPIB has processed four schemes namely 1,230MW plant at Haveli Bahadur Shah, Jhang district, 1,180MW plant at Bhikki, Sheikhupura district, 1,223MW plant at Balloki, Kasur district and 1,263MW plant at Trimmu Barrage, Jhang district.
