Drainage work in District Central under way

Power supply remained stable on Friday, claims K-E

KARACHI: As the torrential rains on Wednesday and Thursday washed away Karachi, many city areas remained submerged in rainwater on Friday. District Central and West, were affected most by the rains, and underpasses, roundabouts and main arteries in these districts are still inundated.

Even when the water on some streets and roads was drained out on Friday, it left behind sticky mud, creating problems for both the pedestrians and vehicles ahead of Eidul Azha.

Many open grounds and parks that were set to be a venue of Eid prayers remained submerged on Friday, leaving little possibility of holding Eid prayers there today.



Eleven ditches that were dug for burying offals of sacrificial animals have also been filled with water, said the spokesperson of Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC). However, the KMC is working on the alternative by digging other ditches for the disposal of waste to be collected on Eid days, he added.

Like other areas of the city, Pakistan Army and Rangers personnel continued rescue work in District Central. Areas including, Liaquatabad No 10, Gharibabad Underpass, Kabili Town Block 5, Petrol Pump Chowrangi, Nauras Chowrangi, Old Golimar Chowrangi, Nagan Chowrangi and Power House Chowrangi, were cleared by the army, while dewatering was under way in areas including Ayesha Manzil, Nazimabad Underpass, Golimar Chowrangi, North Karachi UC 13 and Landikotal. The army rescue personnel also ensured that Orangi and Gujjar nullahs continue draining the water.

Power supply remains stable

According to K-Electric (K-E) Communications Director Sadia Dada, the overall situation of power supply remained stable in the city, despite intermittent rainfall on Friday.



According to her, the electricity supply to key installations including hospitals, Dhabeji pumping station and airport, remained unaffected.

Most of the feeders are working normally and many among those 40 feeders that could not be repaired on Thursday were energised by Friday morning after the water was drained out from the areas, Dada said, adding that isolated faults such as broken wires and low voltage were still present.
