Targeted operation ‘to be intensified’ in Balochistan

Apex committee resolves to improve efficiency, working of the Levies, prosecution branch

QUETTA: Reviewing law and order situation in the wake of recent terror attacks in Balochistan, the province’s apex committee on Friday decided to further intensify efforts to take targeted action against the terrorists and their facilitators including those providing them shelter in the province.

The meeting, held at the Chief Minister Secretariat, took place in the backdrop of August 12 suicide attack in Quetta and August 14 blast in Harnai, in which scores of people including 16 security officials were martyred.

Presided over by Balochistan Chief Minister Sanaullah Zehri, the meeting was attended by Commander Southern Command Lt-Gen Aamir Riaz, Home Minister Sarfaraz Bugti, the chief secretary and other senior civil and military officials.

There was a general agreement among the participants that the terrorists are trying to undermine the security and stability in Balochistan and creating fear among the people through their terror acts in an attempt to spread the sense of insecurity and instability.

“The terrorists are trying to sabotage and subvert the pace of economic development through their negative and anti-people tactics, which should be frustrated at all costs using the available means and resources,” the meeting resolved, according to an official statement.

It decided to continue supporting the ongoing action against terrorism in Balochistan by improving the efficiency and working of the Levies and the prosecution branch of the provincial government.

“Terrorists will not be allowed to take advantage in any way and action would continue against them till their complete elimination and busting [of] their hideouts and bases.

“The targeted actions will continue and the prosecution branch will be asked to prepare comprehensive cases against the criminals so that they are punished under the laws of the land,” the forum resolved.

The law enforcing agencies [LEAs] were directed to take action to further improve law and order situation by beefing up security measures in Balochistan, particularly in the provincial capital.

The committee expressed its gratitude over the cooperation of people in making the Independence Day celebrations a complete success by their massive participation with a relative discipline.

It praised the unmatched services of the security agencies and the LEAs during the Independence Day celebrations in all parts of Balochistan.

Fateha was also offered for the departed souls of those who offered sacrifices in the recent terror attacks in Quetta and elsewhere in Balochistan.

Earlier, the meeting thoroughly reviewed the prevailing situation with reference to law and order in general and the recent incidents of terrorism in particular. It resolved to further improve the working, efficiency and capability of the LEAs and ensure working relation among state institutions.

It was decided during the meeting that the working and performance of the prosecution department would be improved so that the cases of terrorism are properly followed.

Performance of the Balochistan Levies was also reviewed during the meeting and it was decided that the working of Levies force would be enhanced to use it in countering the acts of terrorism.
