PESHAWAR: The former secretary of MNA Ayesha Gulalai has admitted that he aided and abetted her in corruption of millions of rupees in developmental projects in her constituency.

“I will submit applications in the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) Ehtisab Commission and the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) against Gulalai for engaging in corruption,” Noor Zaman told a press conference here on Monday.

Zaman said that Gulalai had taken bribes and commission from people through him, adding that he was ready to present all evidence before the Ehtisab Commission and NAB if Gulalai did not apologise to Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan for levelling baseless allegations against him.

He claimed that Gulalai received 14 per cent commission from a contractor for the construction of eight kilometres link road in Bannu and Rs700,000 for another project in Lakki Marwat.

To a question as to why he was mum for so long, Zaman replied, “I remained silent for four years for the sake of my son’s job because Gulalai said that my son will be given a job in the government department.”

Zaman said that Gulalai spent the money through him on the construction of a 4.5-kanal house in Bannu and that he had the receipts of the payments made.

“When she asked me for the receipts, I inquired about my son’s job. She replied that it will be done in due time, so I did not give her the receipts. She became furious and had the Counter Terrorism Department arrest me and locked up in Mandan police station in Bannu,” he said.

Zaman said that he was the personal secretary to Gulalai and knew her family since 1990 as her father had taught him in Bannu Polytechnic College.

JI divided over invitation sent to Gulalai to join party

The Jamaat-e-Islami’s (JI) Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) chapter and its central leadership appear to be divided over the invitation sent to Gulalai to join the party as some JI members are not in favour of the decision.

JI’s provincial Amir Mushtaq Ahmed told The Express Tribune that it was a “non-issue”. “There are more pressing concerns on which I can comment.”

When asked about the explanation sought by the PTI over the JI’s invitation sent to Gulalai, he refused to comment.

A JI senior member from Peshawar, on the condition of anonymity, told The Express Tribune that the invitation to Gulalai by the central leadership was beyond understanding since the party had no culture of making such decisions without consultation.

The member said inviting people to the party was not an issue in democracy, but since Gulalai’s allegations were not proven, at the moment, sending an invitation to her was not fair.

No compromise on ‘character’, Gulalai tells lawmakers

The other day, JI Central Leader Liaquat Baloch had told a private news channel that JI had a strong women’s wing and needed courageous women like Gulalai, who could level allegations through a press conference.

He had said that the JI women wing had approached Gulalai to join the party as her presser had created courage among other women to speak up against any wrongdoings.

The invitation did not sit well with the PTI as the JI is in coalition with the former in the K-P government.

PTI’s Deputy General Secretary Naeemul Haq, on his visit to Peshawar on Sunday, had said that JI should explain their position about inviting Gulalai to join their party.

There is already an issue underway between the PTI and the JI over the Bank of Khyber scandal for the last several months. JI Minister Muzafar Said was accused of corruption in the bank’s affairs, which were later proven wrong, but the government had not taken action against the managing director of the bank who had accused the minister.

Last week, the provincial amir had told The Express Tribune that the PTI had assured his party that action would be taken against the MD within a week.

He said that the JI would think over other options if the government failed to take action against the MD.
