UNICEF mission visits Shaheen Muslim Town, adjoining union councils to review routine immunisation

PESHAWAR: UNICEF has appreciated joint efforts by the Expanded Program for Immunisation (EPI), Polio Eradication Initiative (PEI) and specifically the Water and Sanitation Services Peshawar (WSSP) to counter poliovirus at identified union councils across the provincial capital.

A UNICEF mission visited Shaheen Muslim Town (SMT) and adjoining union councils to review the status of routine immunisation against polio and stressed on the need for integrated approach so that each component of health complements the other.

The delegation led by UNICEF Deputy Country Representative Cristian Munduate, Chief Health and Nutrition Section Kennedy Ongwae visited EPI fixed sites in Shaheen Muslim Town I and II where they were briefed on micro-planning and routine immunisation status.

Polio eradication ‘a national imperative’

A statement issued by emergency operation centre stated that Unicef mission reviewed various activities around community based vaccination (CBV) and visited outreach sessions in the far-flung areas of Shaheen Muslim Town.

It appreciated the synergy of PEI and EPI and maintained that coordinated approach will yield positive results in improving health indicators in the area, the statement said, adding that the UN mission stressed on supportive supervision by government and partner staff and working out detailed micro-planning for routine immunisation at the union council levels.
