KARACHI: As many as 1,560 students graduated from the Dow University of Health Sciences (DUHS) on Sunday with medals awarded to the distinguished graduates at the university's seventh graduation ceremony.

The programmes in which the degrees were conferred upon the graduates included MBBS, BDS, pharma-D, nursing, physical medicine and medical technology.  The event was attended by the university's academic council members, professors, chairpersons, department heads, parents and students.

Since its inception, the university has been vying to provide maximum health services to the community through various ways, said DUHS vice-chancellor Prof Masood Hameed Khan, who was also the keynote speaker at the event. He informed that recently DUHS has become the first public university to perform six successful liver transplants.



Sharing future plans, he said DUHS will soon start renal and bone marrow transplantation. He claimed that the university has shared the burden of the government regarding provision of healthcare services to the public.

He congratulated the young graduates and encouraged them to serve the community. You all have a responsibility towards serving the people of Pakistan, he said. He urged that the young graduates should never stop learning and continue acquiring knowledge throughout their lives. He further requested the policymakers to invest in education for the betterment of the country.

Position holders

The best graduate awards were presented in a total of 19 categories, of which 18 were female graduates and one male. Position holders in 25 different disciplines were also awarded with gold medals at the occasion.

Sundus Sabir of Dow Medical College (DMC), Momina Anis Motiwala of Doctor Ishratul Ebad Khan Institute of Oral Health Sciences and Sitara Luqman of Dow College of Pharmacy were presented with the best graduate awards

While talking to The Express Tribune, the position holder of Sindh Medical College (SMC) Dr Zain Inam Siddiqui remarked, "It's a dream come true." He mentioned that he did not have the highest CGPA till his third year but then his mother encouraged him to aim for the gold medal. "The motivation of my mother and friends helped me get the medal," he added.

Sabir, who was the best graduate in MBBS, said "It seems too good to be true." It was my dream and with the support of my parents I got the award, she claimed. I will further persuade my studies and serve the people of Pakistan in whatever capacity it is possible for me, she added.
