KARACHI: Two alleged street criminals were killed on Tuesday after an exchange of fire with the police in Gulistan-e-Jauhar.

The incident occurred near Pehlwan Goth, when at least four armed men robbed and injured a shopkeeper, identified as Azhar Waseem. According to the police, the suspects opened fired at the shop owner after he offered resistance on their robbery bid.

A van of Sharae Faisal police reached the site while patrolling the area. The robbers opened fire at the police and tried to escape. After an exchange of fire, two suspects were killed, while their two accomplices managed to flee.

Two pistols and a motorcycle were also seized from their possession. The bodies were shifted to Edhi morgue in Sohrab Goth after the completion of medico-legal formalities at Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre.

Separately, law enforcement agencies claim to have arrested a notorious member of the Lyari gang war during a raid conducted on a tip-off in Old Golimar area of Pak Colony. The suspect, Riasat, was arrested along with two of his companions, said the police. A huge cache of weapons was also discovered and seized, on the information provided by him.

According to the police, the suspect is wanted in more than 60 cases including extortion, murder, attempt to murder and kidnapping.
