ISLAMABAD:

A total of 177 cases have been registered and 287 people have been arrested for sheesha smoking in the Punjab so far, stated a report submitted by the Punjab Police in the Supreme Court on Tuesday.

On November 5, the apex court had earlier asked the IGP to curb the prevalence of sheesha smoking in public places like parks, restaurants and hotels.

On Tuesday, Assistant Advocate General Mudassar Khalid Abbasi submitted a report on behalf of Punjab Police. The report stated that sheesha smoking was a non-cognisable offense. Therefore, police cannot take direct action in the matter. Cases have to be registered under Section 188 of the PPC subsequent to a notification under Section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code,” the report stated. The SC will resume hearing of the case today (Wednesday).
