Busted: Three members from Lyari gang war held

Police also arrested three alleged street criminals from Korangi

KARACHI: The Special Investigation Unit (SIU) claimed to have arrested three members of the Lyari gang war allegedly involved in various cases of extortion in the city.

Their arrests were disclosed during a press conference held at SIU office on Saturday afternoon. The suspects have been identified as Tanvir Siddiq, Aqil Abbas and Kamran Aslam.

"They have being involved in collecting extortion from the transporters and the businessmen near Maripur and its surroundings," said SIU chief SP Farooq Awan. "They also harassed the transporters and businessmen by sending coffins and ammunition to them."

The three suspects collected a total of Rs20 million from a goods transporter, SP Awan claimed. Moreover, the suspects also lit the vehicles of the company's owner on fire and collected additional Rs5 million from him, he added.

The three have been charged with demanding Rs10 million from welder and threatened to kill his children on refusal to pay the extortion money.

Separately, three alleged street criminals were arrested after an exchange of fire with the police in Korangi locality. The suspects, identified as Zeeshan, Ejaz and Asif, were arrested in injured condition.

SHO Khalid Abbasi said that the arrests were made when police were busy snap checking and intercepted the suspects riding on two motorcycles. However, the suspects opened fire at the police and attempted to escape.

The suspects were shifted to Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre for medical treatment under police security. Arms and ammunitions were also seized from their possession.
