The Hurriyat Conference has said that people will continue to wave Pakistani flags at rallies as it considers the neighbouring country, a “well-wisher”.

“Pakistani flags have been waved [in Kashmir] and, will be waved in future as well…,” said Hurriyat Conference chairman Syed Ali Shah Geelani at a function at his residence on Sunday.

Pakistani flags have appeared at several rallies in Indian Kashmir since April 15 this year, leading to severe criticism by the Indian government and opposition parties.

The first instance took place on April 15 when Hurriyat leader Masarat Alam waved the Pakistani flag to greet Geelani at a rally in Srinagar.

The Indian government reacted by arresting Alam and booking him under the Public Safety Act.

On May 29, a Hurriyat spokesperson Yasin was arrested for waving the Pakistani flag at Kashmiri leader Shabir Shah’s rally in Srinagar.

Earlier on May 2, Pakistani flags were waved once again at a Hurriyat rally in Indian Kashmir on Friday.
