LAHORE:
The Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) on Tuesday rapped the ‘disappearance’ of Shahdad Mumtaz, one of its activists, in Turbat on Saturday.
In a statement issued on Tuesday the commission demanded that Mumtaz be accorded due process if he was suspected of committing a crime. The HRCP called on security forces to immediately release Mumtaz if this was not the case. The commission said that it had always assailed arbitrary arrests and detention of citizens. “The HRCP demands the charges against him be laid out and produced in court without further ado if he is suspected of committing a crime. If he has committed no wrong then he should be immediately released,” the statement said. The HRCP exhorted the authorities to institute effective oversight of security forces’ actions to guarantee that citizens’ rights were not violated.
