Sedition case filed against Aamir Khan for 'anti-national' statements

Bollywood actor earlier said his wife suggested they leave India following growing intolerance in the country

A sessions court in the Indian state of Kanpur slapped on Wednesday Bollywood actor Aamir Khan with sedition charges against his 'intolerance' statement.

Advocate Manoj Kumar Dixit, who filed the case against Khan, said his 'anti-national' statement amounts to sedition. The Kanpur sessions court announced that the hearing of the case will be held on December 1.

The case was been filed under the Indian Penal Code (IPC) section 124 A (sedition), 153 A (promoting enmity between different groups on religious grounds) 153 B (Imputations) and 505 (statements conducing to public mischief).

Earlier today, a leader of Hindu nationalist political party, Hindu Mahasabha, said Aamir should either convert or go to Pakistan following his comments regarding growing intolerance in India.

“Aamir Khan should either indulge in ‘ghar wapsi’ which will help him getting free of ‘crimes of love jihad’ of his previous as well as his present wife Kiran Rao or go to Pakistan for the benefit of India,” Hindu Mahasabha’s national general secretary Munna Kumar Sharma said.

Aamir disclosed on Monday that his wife was scared following a number of cases pertaining to religious intolerance and even suggested leaving India. His statements have courted a lot of censure in the country with the ruling party BJP and many Bollywood actors criticising his remarks.

Instead of telling Aamir what is wrong with his statement, these guys (my co-religionsits) are acting like terrorists. There is a lot that is wrong with the statements of Amir, SRK and Salman..however they are patriots and it is the job of other Patriots to point out logically and calmly like civilized citizens about what is wrong with their thinking.

And human rights violation which have by now become a common norm in India should end especially against Indian Muslims who are treated like third class citizens. We are glad that we got our independence from India otherwise we might have been facing the same fate as is the case with Indian Muslims.

And excuse me, could you exactly quote Aamir khan "bad-mouthing" Hindus. I'm not a huge fan but lets give it to the guy - he's pretty docile and always talks of tolerance. Why don't you guys admit that there's huge intolerance in India? You've got massive minorities there: Muslims, Christians, Sikhs and you've massively mistreated them at some point or the other. With the current brand of BJP leaders (and their NDTV debates spewing out hatred and fascist narrative), you cannot just deny the reality. You can buy pork in a muslim country like UAE, you cannot keep beef-look-alike mutton in your refrigerator. What a silly culture are you guys incumbent BJP govt running there ? Stop projecting yourself as a bollywood hero - get real.

R.Subramanian | 8 years ago | Reply When Kamal Hasan faced problems from Islamic groups against his movie “Viswaroopam” at that time Kamal said if he continues to face problems like this means he will goto US or some other safe country where his freedom of expression is understood, after this everyone supported Kamal in a big manner and asked him not to leave the country, even though “Viswaroopam” is a very ordinary movie, due to the opposition from Islamic groups, everyone watched “Visawaroopam” it became very big success… collected more than 100 crore rupees. In the same manner now Amir Khan is telling he will leave the country. Kamal Hassan is a Hindu by Birth but non believer of God, he critises Hindu Gods in his movies. Amir Khan is a Muslim by Birth, he too critises Hindu Gods in his movie PK. When Amir Khan says he will leave the country for his safety, he did not get the support like Kamal got… why ? Everyone suspecting Amir Khan’s motive because religious intolerance is not new to the country… for a country with 130 crore people, only minor incidents are taking (not even 1% of people affected), even for this one or two incidents people Amir are over reacting
