Wife suggested we leave India: Aamir Khan

Published: November 24, 2015

One of India’s top actors, Aamir Khan, on Monday disclosed that his wife is scared following a number of cases pertaining to religious intolerance and even suggested leaving India.

“I have been alarmed. I can’t deny. I have been alarmed by a number of incidents,” NDTV quoted him as saying at the Ramnath Goenka Excellence in Journalism Awards.

The actor — whose wife Kiran Rao is a filmmaker — said he also feels the sense of insecurity and fear has been growing in India since the past six or eight months.

“When I chat with Kiran at home, she says, ‘Should we move out of India?’ That’s a disastrous and a big statement for Kiran to make. She fears for her child. She fears about what the atmosphere around us will be. She feels scared to open the newspapers every day.

Aamir Khan collapses during film shoot, rushed to hospital

“There is this sense of growing disquiet. There is growing despondency apart from alarm. You feel why this is happening, you feel low. That sense does exist in me,” 50-year-old actor said, adding for any society, it was important to have a sense of security and sense of justice.

Endorsing the move by writers to return their awards to register their protest against the atmosphere of growing intolerance, Aamir said for creative people it was important to voice what they feel, adding the ways for creative people to express their dissatisfaction or disappointment is to return their awards.

Growing intolerance in India extremely worrying: Shabana Azmi

“A number of creative people – historians, scientists – increasingly had a certain feeling in them, which they felt they need to express,” he said.

When asked whether he endorsed the protests by the people, Aamir said he would as long as it is non-violent as “all individuals have a right to protest and they can protest in any manner they feel is right as long as they are not taking the law into their hands.”

Unsurprisingly, Aamir’s statement wasn’t received positively in India with colleagues lashing out at the megastar on Twitter. Anupum Kher was most vocal:

India’s ruling party BJP also reacted, terming Aamir’s statement unfair. “We won’t let Aamir leave the country, he is safe. This kind of comment influenced by a politically motivated campaign insults those who have given so much honour to Aamir in India,” said Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi, the Minister of State for Minority Affairs.

Earlier another Bollywood superstar, Shah Rukh Khan, came under fire when he said there was growing intolerance in India.

“It is stupid… It is stupid to be intolerant and this is our biggest issue, not just an issue… Religious intolerance and not being secular in this country is the worst kind of crime that you can do as a patriot,” he had said.

It’s really sad that iconic person like Aamir who has tremendously been contributing in Indian cinema and mostly remain away from controversies & religious disputes is compelled to think this way. Would be a great loss for India, many others will be prompted to follow the path! It’s strange that Kiran Rao is suggesting Aamir to leave India, who up to my knowledge is Hindu by religion!Recommend

Well i think in my humble opinion without any biasness if someone like Aamir Khan and other who feels insecurity and wants to move out then he is free to do so.But the irony is they talk about fear but do nothing by their action. If they feels the western world or Arab world etc etc are more safe then why don’t they just pack their bags and move on,who is stopping them and what are they waiting for???.

As far as i remember most of Bollywood stars own a property in Dubai and some even bought flats in Burj Khalifa much before than this intolerance drama started by some in India. If i am correct one simply don’t buy those expensive flats by paying the hefty sum only to not leave there. Are they??.Of course not, they are buying there to stay there at some point of time so if they feel they are unsafe in India then it is the right time to move there.Recommend

I agreed with Amir Khan on his current statement.Everybody in India has right to speech and express their thoughts so Amir Khan did the same. We need to understand that what he has to say exactly? From August 1947 to May 2014 there was “RAM RAJYA” in almost every state within India under the 60 years ruling Congress party. there were no such kind of religious intolerance type incidents took place in India before. No single riot could took place ever before. We even did not find any “emergency” type situation which took placed before. We also support his wife Kiran Rao’s statement to leave country. Together we need to stand up jointly and help her to find out her choice of country. I think Pakistan is peaceful nation on this earth and both Amir and Kiran should try it at earliest before more intolerances take place in India. Also you both will get more than 500 Cr plus business of your films in Pakistan. So make hurry before Shahrukh Khan entered there. You have golden chance to become ” King Amir Khan” there and let Salman Khan alone leave in India since he has not find any “Intolerance” in India.Recommend

“High quality Pakistani music”? If some one has to make choice between “Lollywood” and “Lollypop” he/she will definitely opt “Lollypop”. Even people in Pakistan would surely find themselves be happy on spending 5/- rupees on Lollypop instead of loosing 500/- rupees on watching third class Lollywood movie. Their is huge diffrence in “Music composer” and “Singer”. Music is soul of any type of song/lyrics. If there is no fabulous tune no body can even like to dance. Nobody would wish ever to listen poor tune. And Bollywood has great history of Musicians e.g.Shankar-Jaikishan/Laxmi-Pyarelal/Ram-Laxman/Madan Mohan/ R.D.Burman/S.D.Barman/Anand-Milind/Nadeem-Shravan/ Ajay-Atul/Anu Malick/Aadesh Srivastav/ A.R.Rehman and many many more. All these are legendry composers forever. And the reason you people always like to dance on their tunes even today.Show us at least one good composer in Pakistan.
