KARACHI: The Sindh High Court (SHC) reserved on Wednesday its judgment on a petition demanding the government release scholarship funds to a health department employee’s daughters.

Headed by Justice Sajjad Ali Shah, the division bench reserved its order after the education department’s additional secretary Abdul Waheed Sheikh assured that the amount will be released soon.

Hakeem Anwar Ahmed, an employee of the provincial health department, had taken the provincial education secretary and endowment fund committee chairperson to the court, for not releasing scholarship fund for his two daughters, Rizwana and Sonia.

The petitioner said that the endowment fund committee chairperson earlier approved his application for the scholarships on February 29, 2014. The petitioner added that the studies of his daughters, who are studying MBBS at Sir Syed College for Girls and Jinnah University in Karachi, were at stake as he was being discriminated and not getting the scholarship.

The officials said that Ahmed cannot avail the scholarship as his salary is Rs500,000. However, the petitioner claimed that he was getting Rs480,000 after deduction of taxes, while his colleagues who receive Rs500,000 were being given this facility.

During the Wednesday’s proceedings, additional secretary Sheikh assured that the scholarship amount will be released to the petitioner. In view of his statement, the SHC bench reserved its judgment that will be announced later.
