US most relevant country to intervene in Kashmir dispute: PM

Premier informs members of US Congress that initial targets of Operation Zarb-e-Azb have been achieved

Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif told American senators on Thursday the United States would be the most ideal party to intervene in the Kashmir dispute between India and Pakistan.

The comments were made by the premier after a meeting with US Senator Bob Corker, Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and ranking members of the committee in Washington.

The premier briefed Senators on his recent four-point peace proposal towards India. He also thanked the US for provision of counter-terrorism assistance by the US Congress and informed Corker that Operation Zarb-e-Azb has achieved its initial targets and has entered a decisive phase.

The premier thanked the Senate Foreign Relations Committee for its consistent support to democracy, security cooperation and economic development in Pakistan.

Obama, PM Nawaz set for tricky White House summit

PM Nawaz also shared his commitment to remain engaged with Afghan leadership towards promoting peace and reconciliation in Afghanistan, briefing the chairman about his recent peace initiatives towards India.

Meanwhile, members of the Congress underscored the importance of Pakistan in the region, saying the US looks forward to engaging with the country to advance goals of peace and stability in the region.

No compromise on national interest during US visit: PM Nawaz

Earlier, the US Congresswoman and Caucus chairperson Sheila Jackson Lee held a meeting with PM Nawaz in Washington, appreciating the government’s steps for revival of economy and counter-terrorism measures.

President Barack Obama is expected to press Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on ties with the Taliban, nuclear safety and a range of other fraught issues Thursday when the troubled allies meet at the White House.

Sandip | 8 years ago | Reply Isn't it sheer common sense that when the US has not been able to get Pakistan to toe it's line in AfPak where it is losing it's own soldiers and treasure and when Pakistan is perennially dependent on the US for it's handouts from time to time, it stands no chance whatsoever to get India to do anything whatsoever. One is therefore amazed why the Pakistanis keep bleating the same tune again and again. Those bleats may sound music to the Pakistani awaam who have been bred on this daily dose of "Kashmir banega Pakistan", but to the human civilization it's nothing more than cacophony.

One one side you have Pakistan - a supposed friend who was caught hiding OBL, providing assistance to the Haqqani and spreads anti USA propaganda to it's citizens. On the other side you have India - a supposed friend who consistently sided with the Soviet Union during the cold war and also spreads anti USA propaganda to it's citizens. Seems like nothing but a big headache with zero upside.

Instead of solving our own problems mutually through give and take, Pakistan is inviting the white man again, who will again take advantage of these divisions and rule us... Then Pakistanis after realising their duped will hate US, burn their flags.. Nobody not even your 'all weathered friend' China is ready to jump into this mess. this issue has lived its life. Better Pakistan abandon Kashmir and live and let live everybody in peace.

Of course, relevance hardly means they would intervene since they've washed their hands of sorting out such messes the moment they existed stage left to Blighty.

Last Word | 8 years ago | Reply Well, Pakistan foreign policy needs to be revisited soon as it is a total failure on all fronts. Pakistan use of proxies against neighbours has not only resulted in spoiled relations with them but condemned by rest of the world. Pakistan recent policy to internationalise Kashmir, plebiscite attempts and complaints against India are finding no takers including UN. It takes generations to revive a lost reputation.

Din | 8 years ago | Reply From reports, US government returned Pakistan's dossiers about "Indian terrorism" in Pakistan unread with the rejoinder that Pakistan should first try to weed out terrorists from Pakistan. That was a rebuff though it might not have been taken to be one by Nawaaz Sharief.

zamin | 8 years ago | Reply US has not intervened from last 68 years neither they will like to do in future. at present they are finding the very good market of there military hardware by exploiting the Kashmir issue between two neighbors. today what is happening in Kashmir is only known to kashmiri people's the criminal silence of Indian and international media on grave human Rights violation, presence of such a draconian laws like PSC and AFSPA and presence of about 1 million Indian forces for less than 100 militants(claimed by Indian agencies).why will US bother about that, they want the market. so for God sake do not make our future generations to suffer any more as we have suffered very much. and let we Kashmiri's Will decide our future own as we are also human beings

GKA | 8 years ago | Reply Indians would agree with Nawaz. Even at the height of the cold war when India was in Russia camp, USA did not intervene - they recognize indian's sensitivity on this. So if USA is the country Nawaz chooses, India would agree. It would mean no action !
