LAHORE: A consumer court on Wednesday directed a butcher to pay Rs144,200 in damages for delivering substandard meat to a customer.

Petitioner Sardar Asim Hassan told the court that he had ordered three goats to be supplied for Rs59,250 on October 23, 2012.

He said the butcher had been asked to sacrifice the animals on his behalf and deliver the meat by October 27.

He said the meat delivered was of poor quality and badly cut.

He said when he complained about the meat quality, the butcher told him there was nothing he could do about it.

“He refused to return the payment he had received,” the petitioner said. “He also would not give me fresh meat in exchange.” He said the butcher had also delivered the meat late.

He said the butcher had ruined Eid celebrations for his family.

The court ordered the butcher to pay Rs144,200 to the petitioner within a month.

The judge said if he failed to do so, he could be sentenced to three years imprisonment and fined Rs25,000.
