Indian police arrest Hurriyat leader Shabbir Shah in New Delhi

Arrest comes a day after Pakistan rejected India’s advice against meeting Hurriyat leaders ahead of Pak-India talks

NEW DELHI: Indian police arrested on Saturday senior Hurriyat leader and chairman of the Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) Democratic Freedom Party Shabbir Ahmed Shah, Radio Pakistan reported.

According to reports, Shah was taken into custody by the police from the New Delhi airport soon after his arrival in the Indian capital to meet Prime Minister's Advisor on Security and Foreign Affairs Sartaj Aziz.

The Pakistani High Commission in New Delhi had invited Hurriyat leaders to a reception in honour of Aziz on Monday.

Earlier, addressing the media in Srinagar, Shah stated that talks between Pakistan and India must go on as per schedule, despite the ongoing tensions on both sides of the Line of Control (LoC).

Meanwhile, veteran Hurriyat leader Syed Ali Gilani continues to remain under house arrest in Srinagar.

Further, the Indian police have also arrested Hurriyat leaders Muhammad Yousuf Naqash, Syed Bashir Andrabi and Mir Hafeezullah in Srinagar.
