KARACHI: With a long road ahead, Karachi Se Lahore seems to have started its box office road trip on a decent note, as the film managed to collect a total of Rs16 million during its first three days.

After releasing in over 60 screens in Pakistani cinemas, the film will get 20 more screens from this week, taking its total count to 80.

Release of the road-movie coincides with an already clouded weekend for local films. Cinema owners are spoilt for choice, not just in terms of international films, but also Pakistani movies, with Bin Roye and Wrong No. already playing in cinemas.

Speaking to The Express Tribune Nadeem Mandviwalla, managing director of Mandviwalla Entertainment, told that the film has done exceptionally well in multiplexes. “The business of the movie in Atrium Cinemas (Karachi) and Centaurus (Islamabad) has been exceptional up till now,” Mandviwalla told The Express Tribune.

According to Mandviwalla, this trend was not only restricted to the likes of Karachi Se Lahore but also to other Pakistani movies that were being screened during this period. “It has been a remarkable weekend for all films, especially Pakistani movies.”

Even though Karachi Se Lahore’s earnings have been respectable, it is still less than the first three-day box office collection of Bin Roye and Wrong No.

Despite this, the distributors are confident that Pakistani films will continue to perform well in the coming few weeks and this should not be seen as a “one-off event”.

“The reason why Pakistani movies are doing so well is because of the level of promotion that is taking place and unlike international films that are easily pirated our local films tend to have a longer life,” said Hassaan Asghar of Distribution Club.

The movie has performed slightly better in Punjab due to a higher number of screens.

Even in single screen cinemas, the movie has exceeded expectations with Adeel Imtiaz, owner of Bambino Cinema noting that despite Wrong No’s headstart, Karachi Se Lahore’s performance is at par with it.

“Wrong No had the advantage of being released on Eidul-Fitr hence more people came and saw that movie but in spite of that, Karachi Se Lahore has managed to record the same level of occupancy,” stated Adeel.

Karachi Se Lahore, which has been directed by Wajahat Rauf, features Shehzad Sheikh, Ayesha Omar, Javed Sheikh, Ahmed Ali, Yasir Hussain and Eshita Syed in the lead roles.
