LAHORE:

Environment Protection Minister Shujah Khanzada said on Thursday that climate change could have a serious impact on glaciers in Pakistan’s Northern Areas.

He was speaking at an event held to raise awareness regarding the impact of climate change. The Green Save Foundation and the Unified Media Club of Pakistan had arranged the session.

Khanzada said it had been anticipated that due to climate change, overall temperature in Pakistan would rise far more than in many other countries. He said melting of glaciers would not only result in a loss of beauty on the mountains but would also cause massive floods in the River Indus. Green Save Foundation president Yasir Sheikh said it was imperative for Pakistan to promote sustainable development to tackle the effects of climate change. Vice President Haroon Akram Gill said extreme climate-related events, including floods, had been occurring in Pakistan.
