KARACHI: The central bank of Pakistan on Wednesday formally joined microblogging website Twitter.

The account, @StateBank_Pak was launched by State Bank Governor Ashraf Mahmood Wathra at a ceremony in Karachi.

The move came on the 67th anniversary of the central bank.

The account made a total of five tweets on Wednesday. In addition to announcing itself on the microblogging site, the account tweeted out a monthly statistical bulletin, a report on the freshly issued rate of remuneration on special cash reserve account, a circular on subsidy for exporting wheat, and the quarterly infrastructure finance review for January-March 2015.

By the end of Wednesday, the account had over 100 followers.

The social media website is fast gaining popularity, especially in Pakistan where there are an estimated 2 million accounts. Though it lags far behind the likes of Facebook, it has become a popular medium for companies to interact with followers and releasing statements.
