Two death row convicts die 'mysteriously' in Kot Lakhpat Jail

Police officials suspect that the deceased may have been poisoned to death

LAHORE: Two death row convicts in Lahore's Kot Lakhpat jail mysteriously lost their lives on Wednesday, Express News reported.

Although the reason of the deaths remained unknown, prison wardens said one of the deceased was suffering from diabetes while the other had AIDS.

Further, the bodies have been shifted to a nearby hospital for post-mortem reports as the police suspect that the deceased did not die due to their respective illnesses, however may have been poisoned to death.

Earlier on Wednesday, Aftab Bahadur Masih was executed in Lahore’s Kot Lakhpat Jail despite requests from rights groups and church leaders to halt the execution, terming his conviction as flawed.

Masih’s lawyers said he was tortured into confessing to murder, in a case that has prompted concern among rights groups and the United Nations.

Aftab Bahadur was sentenced to death for killing three people in 1992 and human rights group Reprieve said two witnesses who said Bahadur was implicated under torture.
