ISLAMABAD:

PTI Chairman Imran Khan on Sunday expressed concern over the death sentence meted out to ousted president Mohammed Mursi by an Egyptian court.

He said that Pakistan had suffered tremendously as a result of the hanging of its democratic leader Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto by a military dictator.

The Pakistani nation and democracy in Pakistan continue to suffer the fallout from Bhutto’s hanging as the Pakistani polity stands polarised and militarised even today. Imran called on Egypt to learn from Pakistan’s bitter experience.

“The only real battle of ideas is fought through the ballot box by winning the support of the people. Sentencing leaders to death does not kill the ideas and aspirations of a people,” he said.

Meanwhile, the PPP termed the sentence as “most unfortunate and deplorable”.

“Egypt is a brotherly country, its political stability and the welfare of its people is dear to the people of Pakistan,” PPP Co-chairman Asif Zardari said.
