LAHORE:

Lahore High Court (LHC) set aside on Tuesday Punjab University (PU) Law College Principal Shazia Qureshi’s appointment as professor and dean of faculty of law.

The court reverted Qureshi, the wife of Vice Chancellor Mujahid Kamran, to the post of associate professor.

Justice Syed Mansoor Ali Shah issued the directives on a petition moved by Javed Sami and Shumaila Gul. They said Qureshi had been appointed professor and dean in violation of the constitution and the University of the Punjab Act, 1973.

“Her selection is the result of mala fide… and nepotistic exercise of statuary authority by the VC,” they said.

The petitioners said the appointment was in violation of Higher Education Commission guidelines adopted by the PU through a notification on June 6, 2007.

They had also sought court’s directive for the PU to hold its Senate elections in accordance with the provision of the University Act.

The court took exception to the fact that the PU Senate had not been constituted since 2008. The judge directed the VC to make it functional within five months.
