None of the death row inmates currently lodged in the province’s detention centres are members of terrorist outfits, the inspector general of prisons in Balochistan said on Sunday.
Talking to The Express Tribune, Inspector General Prisons Bashir Ahmed Bangulzai revealed that all of the 14 prisoners were awarded death penalties over murder cases related to personal disputes. “One prisoner each is in Quetta and Gadani jails while 10 are in Mach Jail, one of the largest jails in Pakistan,” he said giving out details of the inmates.
According to details, four prisoners were charged under the terrorism acts however it was later found that they were involved in killings related to personal disputes. Of the 14 convicts on death row in the province, the mercy petition of one prisoner is currently with the president for pardon. While the decision is yet to be made on the petition all other pleas have been rejected.
In the wake of the Taliban school massacre in Peshawar, security has been beefed up in and around the prison facilities in Balochistan.
