ISLAMABAD:

The Supreme Court will take up a contempt petition against Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif today (Thursday) over his failure to implement the court’s order regarding local government polls in cantonment areas.

A three-judge bench, headed by Chief Justice Nasirul Mulk, will hear the plea filed by Raja Rub Nawaz regarding the non-implementation of several court directions on the matter.

The court, had earlier initiated contempt proceedings against ex defence secretary Asif Yasin over the government’s failure to hold elections in all 53 cantonment boards by May 5, 2013. It later passed several directives on this issue, but the government never completed its preparations for local government elections in cantonments.

Elections in cantonment areas have not been held for the last 15 years.
