Law and order: Rangers to retain special powers for three more months

They can now investigate and take action against the criminals for another three months

The powers of Pakistan Rangers have been extended in Karachi for another term of three months, said a notification issued by the provincial government on Saturday.


The Rangers were given additional powers equivalent to those of the police to maintain law and order and control the menace of targeted killings in the city. They can now investigate and take action against the criminals for another three months.


In the on-going targeted operation in Karachi which began on September 5, 2013, the Rangers have conducted 3,561 raids in which 2,935 criminals, including 152 target killers, 225 extortionists, 28 kidnappers and 12 militants, were arrested. A total of 141 encounters were conducted in which 197 criminals and militants were killed. Thirty-two abductees were also recovered while 16 Rangers personnel lost their lives.


In a press statement, the chief minister's spokesperson said that the extension had been approved for another three months.
