A founding member of the Pakistan Peoples Party, Begum Dr Ashraf Abbasi, was laid to rest in the graveyard of Waleed Muhalla, Larkana, on Monday morning amid thousands of mourners.
Begum Abbasi was the first woman deputy speaker of the National Assembly. She had breathed her last on Sunday evening after five years of protracted illness.
Thousands of party workers and citizens attended her last rites, but not a single prominent PPP leader participated in the funeral procession. Leaders of other parties, including Pakistan Muslim League - Functional’s Akbar Shah Rashdi and Pakistan Muslim League - Nawaz’s Shafqat Hussain Unnar as well as former PPP MPA Haji Anwar Mahar attended her namaz-e-janaza. Some of the party leaders including Syed Khursheed Ahmed Shah, Nisar Ahmed Khuhro and Bilawal Bhutto condoled her death through messages to the family. The soyem will be held at her home in Waleed Muhalla on Wednesday.
