HYDERABAD:

A makeshift dam, built to hold and divert the Indus river's water away from the Sukkur barrage's gigantic metal gates undergoing replacement, was washed away along with engineering machinery late on Wednesday night. The preliminary inquiry has held a local contractor responsible for the incident.

The dam broke near the gate number 44 in the 66-gate barrage located in Sukkur district. The irrigation officials told the media that the work on the concerned gates will remain suspended until the water level dropped from the existing 33,970 cusecs in upstream barrage.

They expected this to happen in around two weeks. During this period the barrage's canals are also likely to receive less quantum of water. In a similar yet major incident in June, 2024, one metal gate of the barrage was washed away while another one was damaged, prompting the provincial government to urgently undertake the barrage rehabilitation project.
