An anti-terrorism court (ATC) on Saturday granted bail to 50 Pakistan Awami Tehreek (PAT) activists facing various charges in the Model Town case.
Counsel for the accused told the court that the people had been arrested while protesting against the Model Town incident. He said that police had even framed terrorism charges against women and old men.
The prosecution opposed granting bail to the accused. However, the court ordered their release. A few of the suspects had to submit bail bonds worth Rs100,000 and Rs30,000.
Earlier, the Faisal Town, Shahdra and Shahdra Town police registered cases against hundreds of people for protesting during the Model Town incident. At the previous hearing on Wednesday, the court removed names of 13 PAT activists from the FIR.
The Faisal Town SHO had nominated several people, including PAT General Secretary Khurram Nawaz Gandapur, chief security officer Altaf Hussain Shah, and office bearers Mian Zahid Islam, Sajid Mehmood Bhatti, Sheikh Fayyaz and Tanvir Sindhu for instigating violence during the protests.
Twelve people died and at least 80 were injured during the clashes on Tuesday .
