LAHORE:

The Lahore High Court (LHC) on Friday said that it would initiate proceedings against the politicians who had not appeared in court despite summons over a petition to bring back their foreign assets to Pakistan.

The politicians whose counsels appeared in the Lahore High Court to respond to the court’s summons on Friday, are: Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan, Shah Mahmood Qureshi, Chaudhry Aitzaz Ahsan, his wife Bushara Aitzaz, former LHC chief justice Khawaja Sharif, former Lahore High Court bar president Ahmad Awais and National Accountability Bureau Chairman Qamaruz Zaman.

Supreme Court Bar Association former president Asma Jahangir told the court that she had no foreign assets. She also objected to the issuance of summons by the court without first hearing her version and said that the petition was not maintainable.

The judge asked her to give her arguments in writing if she had any objections to the maintainability of the petition.

On May 20, the Lahore High Court served notices to several politicians, including Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif, PTI Chief Imran Khan, Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid Chief Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain, Pakistan Peoples Party Chairman Bilawal Bhutto and former president Asif Ali Zardari.

The petitioner has requested the Lahore High Court to issue orders to several politicians to bring their foreign assets back to Pakistan.

After hearing the arguments on Friday, Lahore High Court Justice Malik Manzoor Ahmad said that the proceedings against absentee politicians would start on September 17.
