KARACHI: A short timeline on prominent attacks in Balochistan:

June 2, 2011: Prominent Baloch intellectual and assistant professor at the University of Balochistan Saba Dashtiari was gunned down by unidentified assailants. According to eyewitness accounts, Dashtiari, 58, was on his routine evening walk when an armed man opened fire on him from close range, resulting in instant death.

August 19, 2011: The bullet-riddled bodies of four missing activists of Baloch Students Organisation (BSO-Azad) were found in two separate areas of Mastung, about 50 kilometres south of Quetta.

Two other bodies were found after dawn near Kushkak. The victims were identified as Hamid Baloch and Latif Baloch. These were also reported to be affiliated with BSO-Azad.

July 11, 2012: Unidentified assailants shot dead two tribesmen who were returning from a funeral, and dumped their bodies on a street in the Eastern Bypass area of Quetta city, police officials said.

The deceased were identified as Khan Mohammad and Khalid Dad, both members of the Marri tribe and residents of New Kahan.

January 6, 2013: A government official was shot dead along with his son, while his daughter was wounded, in a firing incident in Panjgur district.

April 16, 2013: President of the PML-N Balochistan chapter Sardar Sanaullah Zehri’s convoy was targeted by a bomb blast in his area of Zehri as he was returning from an election campaign from a nearby area. The political candidate escaped the attack unhurt; however, four others were reported dead. The dead included Sanaullah Zehri’s son Sikander Zehri, his brother Mir Mehar and nephew Mir Zaid.

July 13, 2013: Assailants shot dead a nephew of the spokesman for the provincial chief minister in the Mehnaz area of Buleida Kech district.

August 14, 2013: Leader of the National Party and a member of the Balochistan provincial assembly Mir Azeem Buleidai was found dead at his residence in Turbat on. Buleidai’s body with a gunshot wound was discovered at his Airport road residence.

March 10, 2014: A central leader of the Balochistan National Party (BNP-Mengal), Haji Athahullah Mohammedzai, and his armed guard were shot dead in a targeted attack in Khuzdar district, about 300 kilometres from Quetta. A second guard was also injured in the attack.

June 13, 2014: Unidentified men gunned down President of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) Khuzdar city chapter Muhammad Alam Jattak in Khuzdar, Express News correspondent Shah Hussain reported.
