KARACHI: A district and sessions court sentenced a man to six years in prison in an attempted murder and police encounter case after the prosecution successfully established the charges against him on Monday.

The criminal, Muhammad Javed Pathan, was also found guilty of looting citizens near the Jam Sadiq Bridge in Korangi on August 1, 2013. The district East assistant sessions judge, Sarwat Sultana, sentenced Pathan and imposed a fine of Rs70,000. In case of non-payment, Pathan will have an addition two months added onto his imprisonment.

According to the prosecution, the accused was busy looting, along with an accomplice, when the police arrived on the spot. In an attempt to escape, the suspects opened fire on the police, who retaliated and fired back, injuring the two in the process.

During the encounter, Pathan's accomplice, Nomi, was critically injured and paralysed. A policeman was also injured in the crossfire. Court officials said that Nomi was still under treatment and will, therefore, have a separate trial when he recovers.

A case, No.513/13, was registered at the Korangi Industrial Area police station under Sections 324 (attempted murder), 353 (assault or criminal force to deter a public servant from discharging his duty) and 34 (common intention) of the Pakistan Penal Code.

Javed, who was on bail, had his bail cancelled and was remanded back to the police to serve out his sentence.
