The owners of illegal bus stands and terminals across Azad Jammu and Kashmir have been given a two-week deadline to vacate them or face action.
AJK Transport Minister Tahir Khokhar said on Sunday that more than 100 bus and three-wheeler stands across the region were being run illegally by transporters and their agents.
“These illegal bus stands are causing problems for pedestrians in major commercial areas,” he said. He also claimed to have “solid information that these illegal bus stands are being used by criminals as meeting points.”
He said that only the Mirpur, Muzaffarabad and Kotli general bus stands were registered and legal, while also noting that the illegal ones lack proper seating and other basic facilities for passengers.
He said the tourist season was around the corner and “we have to provide neat and clean bus stands to attract tourists to the region”.
“Following the closure of these bus stands, we will establish new ones with better facilities at district and tehsil levels,” Khokhar said.
