Details discussed: South Asian labour conference from April 24

Through a video link, Punjab Minister for Labour and Manpower Raja Ashfaq Sarwar and ILO representatives in Islamabad and Delhi discussed the details of the first South Asian labour conference that will kick off on April 24 in Lahore.


The video conference was held at the ILO office in Islamabad on Monday, said a press release.

Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif will inaugurate the conference,
while Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif will be the chief guest at the concluding ceremony.

The video conference was attended by Labour and Overseas Pakistanis Secretary Raja Hasan Abbas, Punjab Labour Secretary Muhammad Yousaf, Member Punjab Assembly Ramesh Singh, SAARC Islamabad Chamber Secretary Iqbal Tabish and Punjab Employees Social Security Institution Commissioner Farhan Aziz Khan, while the Sub Regional Office (SRO) of the ILO in Delhi was represented by SRO Director Tine Staermose.

Sarwar appreciated the close coordination of the ILO, EU and representatives of member countries in organising the international conference.

He said the labour conference will provide a common platform to all the stakeholders to deliberate on important subjects.

He said the participating countries would develop a common strategy to tackle the issues confronted by labourers in South Asia.

Punjab Labour Secretary Muhammad Yousaf said that Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Maldives, Nepal and Bhutan have confirmed their participation in the conference.
