KARACHI: Manufacturing in Pakistan is not expensive if it is carried out on a large scale with a strong focus on research and development of products, according to Hasan Jamil, the head of marketing at Dawlance.

Talking to The Express Tribune, he said that manufacturing is still more attractive if compared to imported, completely built units (CBUs) because of duties and sales tax on CBUs and that a company needs to manufacture appliances within the country to grow in this market.

“We produce in bulk – the reason for our success,” Jamil said, adding that since 1995, the average price of Dawlance refrigerators has been increased by only Rs2,500.

The impact of floods on the company’s sales has not been high owing to the fact that sales in areas affected by the floods were a minimal part of total sales, said Jamil.

On the launch of an automatic washing machine, one carrying a price tag of Rs61,000, Jamil said, “it is a misconception that there exists only a market for low-cost home appliances in Pakistan. We have researched over the last three years and found a large market for the middle-income group, which demands good quality and reliable products.” added Jamil on the sidelines of the launch of Dawlance’s H-Zone automatic washing machine on Tuesday.

Dawlance produces vertical freezers, deep freezers, refrigerators, washing machines and assembles microwave ovens in Pakistan.
